Shushila Karki is a former chief justice and will be Nepal's first female prime minister. She emerged as the Gen-Z protest movement's top choice to lead the country.
Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday after his government's short-lived social media ban triggered a Gen-Z-led uprising that quickly escalated. We're joining us now from Kathmandu is GW correspondent Adil Bhatt. Adil, what can you tell us about the new interim prime minister, Shushila Karki? Well, after a political deadlock, finally a former chief justice, Shushila Karki, has been appointed as the head of the interim government, and decision was arrived following a consensus between Gen-Z protesters and also Nepal's president Ramchandra Podil and the army.
So initially there was a lot of disagreements about this candidate and it took some time, but finally we have this news. But let me tell you more about Shushila Karki. She has created a history by becoming the first woman prime minister of Nepal, and she's going to have a in the caretaker government in the coming days.
And this has happened after three days of intense protests, which were triggered by a ban on some social media platforms and anger against corruption. We met a lot of Gen-Z protesters on the street and we did ask them this question, who's going to lead this new Nepali government? And they've been telling us she's their favorite choice. But they did tell like there were like one particular group, they did not want her to become interim head.
But in the end, after intense negotiations, we have this news. Also, we wanted to say this consensus appeared to be building among Gen-Z protesters also today. And the people actually are now reacting to this news.
Gen-Z are really happy with this decision. In fact, they were part of the process and now they're hopeful that this might trigger a change in Nepal. Also, some of them say that this period before elections is critical in finding a durable political solution to political crisis in the country.
And as I said, like there is some sort of celebration among young Gen-Z because she's known for honesty, integrity, and she's known to take a stand against corruption. Okay, Adil Bhat for us in Kathmandu with the latest there. Adil, as always, thank you.
